As enterprises continue to transition to cloud based applications and services, compliance with newer forms of authentication and authorization becomes increasingly important. One such authentication and authorization standard is modern authentication, which relies on factors such as biometric data, cloud-based sign-in, and voice recognition. Microsoft 365 offers several modern authentication options, including Azure Active Directory Premium and App Proxy. Azure Active Directory Premium offers support for modern authentication methods such as facial recognition and voice recognition, while App Proxy provides cloud-based single sign-on and app access for legacy applications. Modern authentication is an important step in promoting security and compliance both within the enterprise and with regulatory mandates. By using modern authentication methods, organizations can protect their data and identities while complying with increasingly stringent authentication and authorization requirements. Microsoft first announced the eventual phase out of basic authentication a couple year ago. This past October, 2023 Microsoft began disabling basic authentication in tenants.
